A first for CRISPR! Chinese scientists just have injected a human with CRISPR/Cas9 modified cells in a phase 1 study. Lu You at Sichuan University in Chengdu and his team treated a patient with lung cancer with their PD-1 knockout engineered T-cells. Cell therapy pioneer Dr. Carl June comments (via nature.com):
I think this is going to trigger ‘Sputnik 2.0’, a biomedical duel on progress between China and the United States, which is important since competition usually improves the end product.
Bringing CRISPR/Cas9 to the field of cell therapy will hopefully further accelerate the stunning progress we have seen in recent years. Stay tuned.
